Becoming a volunteer with Abingdon Fire Company is a rewarding commitment — one that requires dedication, responsibility, and teamwork. To ensure the safety of our members and the community, all applicants must meet certain eligibility requirements and complete a probationary period.
Probationary Membership
Every new member begins as a Probationary Member. This period allows you to receive training, get to know our team, and demonstrate your commitment. During probation, you’ll:
- Participate in training and education essential to safe and effective operations.
- Learn company procedures, expectations, and culture.
- Work alongside experienced mentors to build your skills and confidence.
Minimum Qualifications
To become a member, you must:
- Be at least 16 years of age.
- Have no felony convictions or disqualifying criminal history.
- Be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Pass a fire department physical exam (meeting NFPA 1582 guidelines) provided at no cost by Abingdon Fire Company.
- Provide official government identification.
- Be a U.S. citizen.
- Submit all required documentation as requested by Human Resources.
Special Requirements
- Application Fee: $25 one-time, due at submission.
- Duty Hours: Minimum of 12 in-station duty hours per month.
- Training: Must obtain Firefighter I or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification within the first year of probation.
- Participation: Attend monthly meetings, drills, community details, and training sessions in accordance with company bylaws and guidelines.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Successful members bring:
- Ability to work well with fellow volunteers, agencies, and the public.
- Physical ability to perform strenuous tasks (including lifting 150+ lbs).
- Ability to remain calm and act effectively in stressful or emergency situations.
- Willingness to learn and grow through training and mentorship.
Work Environment
Volunteering with Abingdon Fire Company is both rewarding and challenging. Members should expect:
- Occasional hazardous conditions and adverse weather during emergency response.
- Exposure to unpleasant sights, sounds, or situations inherent to fire and EMS work.
